The Guest House, by Rumi

This being human is a guest house.
Every morning a new arrival.
A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness comes
as an unexpected visitor.
Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they are a crowd of sorrows,
who violently sweep your house
empty of its furniture,
still, treat each guest honorably.
He may be clearing you out
for some new delight.
The dark thought, the shame, the malice.
meet them at the door laughing and invite them in.
Be grateful for whatever comes.
because each has been sent
as a guide from beyond.
The inevitable happens. What matters is what we do about it.
Amelia got a hernia repair a few weeks ago. This all happened really fast, but it felt like forever. Miranda couldn't be with us at the hospital in the day of surgery. Kids are not allowed in pre-op and recovery rooms.
It wasn't the first time we've dealt with things that are out of our control. And it felt terrible, every single time. So I remember Rumi's words. Life hurts, and there's little we can do sometimes. But storms pass by. This one did.
